If you’re seeking greater freedom and joy in your personal life and legal career, you’re in the right place. Today, we’ll delve into how the key to this freedom may lie in intentionally choosing to ‘lawyer less.’

By embracing the ‘lawyer less’ concept, I’ve personally been able to double my income while working just three days a week. In this post, I’ll outline what this concept entails and how it can help you to enjoy more freedom, more satisfaction, and more fulfillment in your professional and personal life.

“LAWYERING LESS” DEFINITION

First, let’s define what ‘lawyering less’ really means.

Because it’s not about settling for mediocrity, working less for its own sake, or compromising your income, status, or impact in your legal career. Instead, it’s a deliberate choice to reduce the time and energy spent on work without sacrificing impact or income.

It’s about reclaiming your time and energy to align with your life vision and prioritizing what truly matters and serves you best, all while creating a fulfilling career that doesn’t compromise your personal well-being.

My belief is that entrepreneurship, specifically establishing a virtual, flexible law firm in transactional practice areas like estate planning, business law, real estate law, and any field where court attendance is not mandatory, is the ultimate “lawyer less” solution.

4 KEY COMPONENTS OF “LAWYER LESS”

  1. Leveraging Technology

Technology is a game-changer in this context. Utilizing the right tools and software can streamline your workflows, automate admin and repetitive tasks, and enable you to not only save time and effort but also run a thriving law practice remotely.

  1. Flat Fees

Wherever you can and wherever it’s appropriate, charge flat-rate fees that build in a margin to reward you for the efficiency you are building through your automations from point 1.

  1. Building Connections

Building a strong referral network is crucial for a thriving legal practice, even in a remote environment. You don’t need to attend traditional networking events; you can cultivate relationships online with other attorneys, professionals in related fields, and past clients who can refer new business your way. By establishing yourself as a trusted expert in your field, you can consistently attract new clients and opportunities.

  1. Outsourcing

The final key is to outsource tasks that can be done by someone other than yourself. As a solo practitioner or small firm owner, your time is valuable. Delegate administrative and non-legal tasks to virtual assistants, freelance paralegals, or other professionals. This allows you to focus your time and energy on tasks that only you can do in your business.

As we conclude, I invite you to reconsider your approach to your legal career and life as a whole. “Lawyer less” not to compromise your success but to enhance your freedom and joy in both your professional and personal spheres. By leveraging technology, building meaningful connections, outsourcing non-essential tasks, and optimizing your fees in a form of flat fee – you can create a flexible virtual legal practice that truly aligns with your values and priorities.

Let go of the notion that success requires sacrificing your well-being. Embrace the possibility of lawyering less for a more fulfilling, impactful, and joyful life. Remember, you are more than just a lawyer, and you can lawyer on your own terms.
